An acetylene plant is a chemical manufacturing facility that produces acetylene gas by the reaction of water and carbon dioxide by passing electricity. It is a colorless, flammable, non-halogenated hydrocarbon gas produced on an industrial scale for use in welding, cutting, heating, or fuel applications.

 

It can also be produced by the direct reaction of coal, coke, or charcoal in high-temperature processes not requiring water. At a temperature of 1000°C, the gas helps to dissociate water into its atomic components. Without an acetylene plant, the steel industry depends on coal and charcoal to generate the heat required by the process.

 

The acetylene plant uses a variety of processes to produce commercial quantities of acetylene. The production is accomplished using a combination of basic chemical engineering technology and some application of catalytic science for the various process steps.

 

Acetylene plants have an enormous impact on the world's economy. These plants are the source of 80% of all the world's acetylene and they play a vital role in meeting energy demands throughout the modern world. Acetylene plants can be found throughout the United States and Eastern Europe, however China is by far the largest manufacturer and consumer of acetylene in the world.

 

A typical acetylene plant consists of an electrolyze, a purification tower, a main heat exchanger and a blower system. The plant also includes carbon monoxide scrubbers, treatment of wastewater and fossil fuel power generators. Acetylene is used as a refrigerant at low pressures; as a blasting gas for drilling rock; in the industrial manufacturing of such diverse products as vinyl acetate, polystyrene and polyethylene; and in oxyacetylene welding.
