Acetylene Plants are essential part of Chemical Plant for start-up fuel
  • Siddharth Shankar

Acetylene plants are an essential part of a robust chemical plant and are used typically to provide start-up fuel for certain processes. They have been available in three basic forms: large on-site producing plants, medium producing plants on the site of the process, and small desktop multipurpose plants that could be moved from one location to another as needed.

Acetylene plants produce acetylene from calcium carbide, air, and water. The gas is then piped to where it will be used as a welding gas or fuel in cutting torches. Acetylene is not flammable in its pure state.

Acetylene is colourless, transparent, and has a sweetish odour familiar to anyone who has handled lighter fluid.

The Acetylene process involves the reaction of calcium carbide and water to form acetylene gas, which is then carbonised. Wet process consists of hydrosilylation or carbonylation reactions between methanol and acetic acid furnaces, as opposed to traditional dry processes utilising direct coal gases to produce acetylene.

The wet processes are 50 per cent less capital intensive than the dry process, and can produce acetylene at a fraction of the cost. It uses various catalysts for selectivity and produces high yields with fewer impurities.

An acetylene plant is a crucial component of steel mills, aluminium smelters, and other industrial plants that make use of this flammable gas. The plant is responsible for producing acetylene on site, which is a key raw material in the production of various industrial metals. Acetylene plants can either be open reaction systems that utilise the direct combination of calcium carbide and water to produce acetylene, or closed thermodynamic systems that use the heat from a carbon-based fuel source to indirectly produce acetylene gas.

Bhartiya Cryogas, as a leading acetylene plants manufacturer in India is a name to reckon with for high quality acetylene plants. We make superior-quality acetylene plants. We not only provide you with a wide range of products but also caters to your individual needs to make your work easy and comfortable at all times.

Bhartiya Cryogas is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of Acetylene Plants. Our fully automatic Acetylene plants are available in capacities from 25m3/hr to 200m3/Hr. In a Stationary Carbide to Water type Automatic Acetylene Generator acetylene is produced by reaction of calcium carbide with water. Adequate quantity of water is held in the generator shell to which calcium carbide is fed from top. The Ca(O2) crystals go into slaking with water and they crack into CaCO3 and CO2. In the process of slaking, oxygen is released and it causes ignition of Ca (O2) slakes contained in the generator shell. The heat generated in this way heats the water, which continues the reaction between Ca (O2) and the water, resulting in generation of acetylene gas.
