Acetylene is a colorless, odorless gas at standard temperature and pressure, but is often accompanied by its unique and easily identifiable smell, similar to that of garlic or mustard. It is in the chemical family of hydrocarbons. It is the simplest alkali metal hydride and is highly flammable as well as one of the most hygroscopic of all the gaseous elements.

Acetylene is a chemical compound that is made by the reaction of water and carbon dioxide. It can be used to make many different chemicals. Some acetylene reactions require large amounts of pressure in order to work. So, the gas is put into cylinders known as acetylene cylinders. These cylinders are used to power tools such as torches that produce very high temperatures, more than three times hotter than a blow torch. They are also used to cut steel and make plastics and resins.
