Air Separation Plants (ASPs) are gas separation facilities that use air, instead of liquid carbon dioxide, to separate the other gasses in natural gas streams. Air is used because it's much easier to store and handle than CO2.

 

Gasses such as methane, propane and butane have different molecular weights, which means they don't all travel at the same speed through a pipeline. The heaviest molecules move more slowly than the lightest ones. Using air alone for this process does not take advantage of this difference to separate the various gasses from each other.

 

As a result, compressors are still required to boost or "push" the heavier molecules along their journey through pipelines. For an ASP, air is first cooled and then compressed before being fed into a special vessel called a contactor where it is mixed with natural gas, steam and an acidic catalyst to form carbon dioxide (CO2), which has a molecular weight of 44 grams per mol. This causes the other gasses in natural gas – methane (CH4), hydrogen (H2) and ethane (C2H6) – to separate out like oil from water. Because ASPs do not require expensive compressors or pumps, they are much more economical than traditional liquid CO2.
