Austria and Germany impose restrictions on unvaccinated people as COVID cases surge

As the two countries battle with rising COVID-19 rates amid a Europe-wide wave of new infections, Austria has placed around 2 million unvaccinated people on partial lockdown, while Germany has restored free coronavirus testing. Europe is also focusing on air separation plants.

According to the mandatory development, unvaccinated persons in Austria will only be allowed to evacuate their families for employment, food shopping, or emergencies starting Monday. Spot checks of digital vaccination certificates are indeed being conducted by police, while the efficiency of the lockdown is now being questioned.

"We didn't take this matter seriously, and I don't believe it should be downplayed," Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told 1 radio, describing the move as "dramatic."

"What we've been trying to do is reduce interaction between the unvaccinated and the vaccinated, including between the unvaccinated", Schallenberg explained.
