COVID-19 Vaccination in India: Bhartiya Cryogas
  • Sneha Mordia

Despite PM Narendra Modi herculean efforts to complete full vaccination of all eligible population, in ⅔rd district, less than half of all adults’ population are fully vaccinated.

In 75 districts, the share of fully vaccinated adults is 25% or less and in almost ⅔ rd districts (414 of 628 districts), the share of fully vaccinated adults is 50% or less as data’s compiled by How India Lives reveals.

On November 17, although over 80% of adults have now received at least one dose of the vaccine, 44% of the country’s districts (224 of 628 districts of 2011 census with Delhi and Mumbai districts merged into one) have not achieved this target. In 18 districts (eight of them in Nagaland, seven in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya and one each in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, the first dose of vaccine coverage is under 50%.

At the national level, the share of fully vaccinated adults went past the share of partially vaccinated for the first time on November 16. As of November 17, this was yet to happen in 316 of the 628 districts. While over 40% of adults in the country have been fully vaccinated, at the district level, this threshold has not been reached in almost half (305 of 628 districts) of the districts in the country.

Few districts reporting an increase in average daily cases further emphasizes the need for enhancing vaccine coverage. Moreover one dose of a Covid 19 vaccine offers less protection from the infection that the complete vaccination.

This is significant findings as vaccination still remains the most powerful weapon to fight Covid pandemic. Realizing the importance of speeding up vaccination, PM Modi launched a new campaign “Har Ghar Dastak” to achieve the ambitious target of fully vaccinating the entire adult population. This outreach campaign will work in partnership of NGOs (Non-Governmental Organization), CSOs (Civil Society Organization) and Development Partners.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviy, Union Health Minister announcing the scheme said: “Modi Ji has always emphasized that the achievement with regard to COVID Vaccination is a collective effort of the entire country”.

Jan-Bhagidari (Citizen’s Involvement) is essential for a mammoth India’s vaccination programme. “India stood tall in COVID crisis because of the initiative of non-government organizations and civil society organizations who supplemented the efforts of the government to ensure that nobody slept hungry during the long period of COVID lockdown,” Dr. Mandaviya noted. “They contributed in ensuring that 80% of the population and 40% of the population receive their first and second dose of the vaccine, respectively,” he added.

Beside the vaccination, the Health Minister is constantly engaged with his counterparts in state government to boost up health infrastructures including adequate availability of medical grade oxygen in case of an emergency. Government hospitals have floated several tender bids to invite private companies to install an oxygen production plant and oxygen supply.

Private companies in India are on the forefront in the fight against Covid virus from day one of the outbreak.
