Cryogenic vs PSA Oxygen Plants
  • PRAKSHI RAWAT

There are various methodologies for producing oxygen to satisfy the requirements of scientific and industrial uses. Cryogenic extraction, PSA oxygen plant and membrane technology are the most prevalent procedures.

Cryogenic and PSA technology have unique pricing.

Customers who already are familiar with the oxygen factory are often confused by the differences between frozen and PSA oxygen facilities. Most of them assume that all O2/N2 gas plants are priced identically to PSA plants, which wasn't the case. Because the technology is so distinct, the cost of a pressure swing adsorption plant somehow doesn't match that of a cryogenic-based plant.

Pressure swing adsorption technique is helpful for enterprises that only want oxygen in small batches and with poorer purity. PSA is based on a very simple adsorption process using adsorbing materials such as Zeolite adsorbent, with one gas adsorbed more than others. Nitrogen is absorbed but oxygen is able to pass through this when air is passed.

PSA reactors are less costly to make than cryogenic plants because the PSA process uses simple technology. Cryogenic technology is complex and it necessitates the use of a lengthy procedure using components that are much pricier than those used within the PSA method.

PSA vs. Cryogenic Method: Oxygen Purity

As earlier said, PSA is better for producing oxygen with less purity and volume than cryogenic air separation, which is excellent for creating oxygen with the best quality and volume.

PSA plants could create oxygen on a huge scale with excellent purity, while volume cryogenic oxygen plants can. PSA plants with a layout of 200m3/hr, let alone capacity plants, are unusual.

Both oxygen and nitrogen can be created by cryogenic plants

Only one product gas, either nitrous or oxygen, can be manufactured at a PSA plant. A cryogenic plant, on the other hand, may generate both oxygen and nitrogen. Nitrogen could also be produced by an oxygen plant. It would, however, need the procurement of an oxygen cylinder filling plants

The cryogenic method can produce liquid and gaseous oxygen

A cryogenic oxygen plant produces both liquid and gaseous oxygen. PSA oxygen plants, on the other hand, only can create oxygen or nitrogen in gaseous form.

Various life-cycles

Plants that seem to be cryogenic and those that are PSA have distinct life cycles. Whereas PSA seems to have a service life of over ten years, cryogenic oxygen plants have a service life of over twenty-five years. Because the cryogenic O2/N2 plants are built of cryogenic grade steel material, which can tolerate high heat and pressure, this is feasible. TIG argon soldering is used to manufacture cryogenic air separation systems.

PSA oxygen plants have a variety of uses

PSA  oxygen plants are suitable for small businesses that require less volume of oxygen and are ready to accept lesser purity oxygen. The following industries are most suited for the plants:

Cutting/welding/heating

The unit is suitable to produce oxygen on-site for spot welding. Where purity is not a requirement, oxygen is combined with acetylene plants in this industry.

Beads and glass blowing

It can be used to blast glass and make pearls in the glassware business. It is a cottage industry in which oxygen is involved in the production of several types of glasses.

Fisheries

Small PSA plants are used to oxygenate pond water, which is vital for fish health.

Cryogenic oxygen plants have a variety of uses

Cryogenic oxygen generators are ideal for businesses that require high, large-scale production of oxygen or nitrogen. The following is an example of industries that use cryogenic plants:

- Industry of Steel

Commercially produced oxygen is utilized by the steel industry the most. In the steel industry, on-site freezing units are employed to develop huge amounts of material oxygen.

- Industry of Chemicals

After the copper industry, this industry is the second consumer of oxygen. In this case, bigger amounts of carbon dioxide with higher purity are required, which can only be obtained by a cryogenic process.

- Industry of health or health care
In the medical field, purity oxygen is also needed. Cryogenic oxygen plants that produce oxygen with incredibly high purity.
