GOI Launches Program to Train Health Workers in Adequate Oxygen Utilisation

The National Oxygen Stewardship Programme (NOSP) will be implemented by the National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC) with support from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The programme will involve training of health care workers in public and private sector hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood banks and ancillary departments on rational utilisation of medical oxygen.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) will later assess their performance and sanction payments for their services.

India will also conduct a survey to assess the current status of medical oxygen in hospitals, besides addressing bottlenecks that are lessening its availability and stopping it from being used wastefully.

The centre has also set up an OxyCare dashboard that disseminates information on the available oxygen stock for its better distribution.

“The Covid-19 pandemic not only accelerated the demand for medical oxygen but also the need for its timely delivery; while the Union government has supported the states in setting up and strengthening oxygen production and delivery mechanisms, variable gaps were observed in the training of professionals involved in the administration of oxygen. This workshop aims to repurpose, re-orient and upskill the existing manpower in order to make sure that any untoward incident arising due to the pandemic gets managed professionally without any undue stress on the systems,” said Rajesh Bhushan, health secretary.
