Good News: Anti- Covid Pills Could Be Available Soon

After vaccines, pills to treat COVID-19 could be soon emerge as a successful weapon to fight against coronavirus spread. The development of pills that could be taken orally like other prescriptions drugs is on the verge of success.

Till now two of world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies, Pfizer and Merck have been able to develop the antiviral pills prototypes for laboratory tests. Their pills called Paxlovid and Molnupiravir respectively have shown promising results in clinical trials conducted on adults with positive Corona symptoms.

As per experts the antiviral pills could work in tandem with the highly protective vaccines to check the pandemic outbreak.

The publicly available data’s released by two companies show that the COVID-19 antiviral drugs could be taken at home and could be purchased from pharmacies on prescription. Both can be taken for five days soon after Covid symptoms are detected. This could immensely boost fight against deadly virus by reducing its ability to spread faster.

To make the pill effective, Pfizer’s drug, Paxlovid includes a low dose of ritonavir — a medicine which is also used to treat HIV.

The ease of using pills is significant difference from the monoclonal antibody treatment which are administered intravenously at medical facility which need a patient visit and are time consuming. Moreover there is a hope that oral medicine treatments could be much more affordable as it will requires less resources to administer.

Since the clinical trials of two drugs still continuing, the companies have not publicly shared these data’s on their effectiveness.

The companies however claims that their drugs are effective. On molnupiravir , Merck claimed that as per the trial data, presence of polymerase inhibitor- a type of drug cut down the risk of hospitalization or death by about 50 percent when given to patients within five days of developing their COVID-19 symptoms.

On Paxlovid , Pfizer claimed that its drug that is combined two components, one an experimental molecule called PF-07321332 and a drug called ritonavir could cut chances of hospitalization or death by 89 percent when given to patients within three days of developing their COVID-19 symptoms, and by 85 percent when given to patients within five days.
