How is Medical Liquid Oxygen Produced?
  • PRAKSHI RAWAT

Oxygen is critically important for survival in this world. By volume, it tries to make up 21% of the greenhouse effect. Oxygen is also found in the continental mantle, responsible for nearly 46.6 percent. Except for helium, neon, argon and krypton, it is an unscented, transparent, and odorless gas that is reactive and produces compounds with all other elements. It is required by humans because of the processes of respiration and combustion. Commercially, non-reactive gas is produced to be used in industries and medicine. We utilize a cryogenic distillation technique to soften and extract oxygen from air in order to generate liquid oxygen plant

Liquid oxygen is utilized in various applications, such as the melting, refining and manufacturing of steel and other metals, medical and biological support, mining, production and indeed the manufacturing of stone and glass items, and so on.

Liquid oxygen generation from air

The gas processing unit produces oxygen by liquefying ambient air (ASU). The cryogenic way of making liquid oxygen for industrial and medicinal applications is the most popular. There seem to be non-cryogenic ways as well, such as the PSA oxygen plants which can produce oxygen with a purity of 90-93 % but is not appropriate for large manufacturing of The air is liquid by putting it through heat transfer and chilling it into acryogenic oxygen plant, which is defined as liquefied gases with a boiling point below -90 degrees Celsius.

The air would then be routed into a high-pressure distillation column, whereby oxygen is separated from these other gases like nitrogen and argon. At the bottom of the distillation process, oxygen is released. Here, oxygen is distilled till it meets commercial purity criteria. Cryogenic storage tanks are then used to store liquid oxygen plants. Liquid storage is preferred over gaseous storage since it is more cost-effective and has more leaks.

1 l of liquid oxygen equals 840 l of oxygen gas, by the way.

Liquid storage tanks, but on the other hand, must be constructed of high-strength materials to endure high heat and pressure. The materials used are also of high quality and fulfill the criteria of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code. Liquid oxygen must always be protected from the temperature of the environment, which demands the use of specialist materials. Vaporization pumps are used in oxygen plants to turn liquid oxygen into gaseous oxygen, valuable oxygen. The cryogenic approach utilizes ambient air, which is then pumped through a compressor. After compression, the air is passed through with a purification system to remove any pollutants including such moisture, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons.
