An Oxygen Plant produces liquid oxygen from air by dehumidifying and cooling the air. The plant is generally used for supplying needed oxygen in industries like steel mills, refinery industries, gasholders, etc. where compressed air is needed which is not available from other sources.
The plant consists of an air compressor section with stacks and filters, a regenerative type oxygen generator plant, liquid oxygen liquefaction apparatus, evaporators and condensers.
An oxygen plant serves two important purposes – they supply the needed oxygen in case of fire and explosion in industries like steel mills, refineries and COD (car fumes degradation) industries; and they produce liquid oxygen for industrial use. Oxygen plants are usually installed in prominent locations because of the safety risk.
An oxygen plant is used to produce oxygen by the reaction of water and pressure swing adsorption(PSA) technology. The process is based on the pressure swing principle which involves the adsorption of nitrogen at a low pressure of 3-10 Kg/cm2 (0-1.4Mbp). This low pressure increases to 15Kg/cm2 (2Mbp) during regeneration of the same.
