10 Facts to Know about Acetylene Plant and Gases
  • Sanjana John

Experts from the Bhartiya Cryogas, India’s leading commercial oxygen manufacturer, manufacturer of oxygen plants, and oxygen cylinder filling plants have answered 10 questions to learn important facts about Acetylene Gas and Acetylene Plants, easily recognized due to its peculiar garlic smells.

The ten decade old Bhartiya Group of Companies with track record of providing services for the prestigious UN Missions provides Engineering Services, Installation and Functional Testing of Projects, Spares, Accessories and Ancillaries for Gas Manufacturing of Plants, assessment of used plants for up gradation, annual maintenance contract of Oxygen plants.

1.    What does acetylene smell like?

Acetylene smells like garlic which is produced from the calcium carbide obtained from calcium carbonate. Further the calcium carbonate is heated in a lime kiln at about 825 degree Celsius which forms calcium oxides (lime). Calcium oxide is then heated in electric furnace with coke to produce calcium carbide finally calcium carbide is hydrolyzed producing acetylene.

2.    What is the other name of acetylene?

Acetylene is also called Ethane, Acetylene, Narcylen, Vinylene.  Amongst the hydrocarbon series containing one or more pairs of carbon atoms linked by triple bonds it is best known.

3.    What is the name of C2H2?

The formula C2H2 is the formula for chemical compound Acetylene (Ethane).

4.    Is acetylene organic or inorganic?

Acetylene is an unsaturated organic compound. Its four atoms are triple bonded through a covalent bond.

5.     What happens when acetylene reacts with water?

When Acetylene reacts with water in the presence of diluted sulphuric acid and mercuric sulphate it forms an unstable product which undergoes rearrangement to give acetaldehyde.

6.    What happens when acetylene reacts with hydrogen cyanide?

When Acetylene reacts with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of barium cyanide to form vinyl cyanide.

7.    What are two uses for acetylene?

Acetylene is primarily used for welding, cutting, brazing and soldering and in making chemicals.

8.     What happens if you inhale acetylene?

Acetylene can affect you when inhaled. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite. Exposure can cause headache, dizziness, lightheadedness and passing out. Very high levels of Acetylene case decrease the amount of Oxygen in the air and cause suffocation and death

9.     What methods are used for the preparation of acetylene?

Acetylene is produced either through a cracking process or chemical carbide.

10.   What is the molecular formula of Ethane?

Acetylene molecular formula is C2H2.
