Acetylene Smells Like Garlic But Has Huge Industrial Usages

Commercial grade Acetylene is a colorless and odorless gas and may have a garlic or Ether like odor. Acetylene gas plants manufacture acetylene gas, which is highly flammable and odorless with a unique smell. It is produced through the process of either cracking or chemical carbide. However these days modern, hi- tech acetylene plants are also available.

Acetylene’s garlic-like smell is produced from the calcium carbide, which is obtained from calcium carbonate. Further the calcium carbonate is heated in a lime kiln at about 825 degree Celsius which forms calcium oxides (lime) liberating garlic smells. Calcium oxide is then heated in an electric furnace with coke to produce calcium carbide. Finally calcium carbide is hydrolyzed to produce acetylene. As acetylene is highly combustible with high flame speed and fast energy release, it can be used as alternative fuel in IC (Internal Combustion) engines. It has a very wide flammability range and minimum ignition energy required for ignition. Acetylene is also primarily used for welding, cutting, brazing and soldering and in making chemicals.
