Ladipo market explosion caused by acetylene gas – LPG retailers
  • PRAKSHI RAWAT

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers (LPGAR), a division of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), says that acetylene gas caused Tuesday's explosion at Ladipo Spare Component Market near Lagos, while the Senate has requested an enquiry. Mr Olukayode Solomon, the party's National Secretary, made the statement in a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos, while expressing sympathy to the families of the victims in the accident.

An explosion took place at an acetylene gas retail market located at No. 33/35 Ojekunle St., Ladipo Spare Part Market, Lagos, murdering five people. Solomon clarified that now the incident has nothing to do with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also called as cooking gas. "It's critical to stress that the acetylene gas outlet whereby the bomb exploded was precisely an acetylene gas," he said. That’s why acetylene plants are very risky.

"Acetylene gas is an industrial gas that is used in welding, cutting, and other chemical products. ”Acetylene gas is commonly given in combination with oxygen gas, which is also an industrial gas. "Unlike LPG explosions, which usually produce inferno, these acetylene plant explosions often cause wide-scale damage comparable to military weapons."

According to him, the destruction sustained by an LPG explosion is caused mainly by that of the spread of something like the inferno, which is decided by the amount of gas leakage and diffusion. "On the other hand, industrial gases including acetylene and oxygen, because to their immense pressure and the hefty weight of their cylinders, often drag down include in the explosion site. "Also, acetylene and oxygen gases do not use the cylinders as LPG, as evidenced by the cylinders that littered that scene of yesterday's explosion.

"It's also worth mentioning that acetylene and oxygen gases do not come from the same sources as LPG," Solomon explained. He went on to say that they have not been regulated by the very same agency that supervises LPG. The former Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), now replaced by that of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, regulated LPG, which had been derived from petroleum and natural gas.

"This is because one such type of distortion has indeed been increasingly prevalent for years," his explained. Meanwhile, the Senate has started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the situation.

Senator Olamilekan Adeola, who moved the motion, stated that "The Senate notes that a gas explosion happened at a domestic Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) sale point at 21, Ojekunle Street in the Ladipo Spare Parts Market area in heavily populated Mushin LGA, Lagos State, about 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021, around 8.30 a.m.;

"Further Notes that now the explosion appears to result with no fewer than 5 deaths, including three adult males, a woman, and a 10-year-old boy who died in a hospital before hospital treatment could be rendered, whereas ten people have always been rescued and treated for injuries here on spot by emergency agencies who replied immediately to the inferno; That’s why acetylene plants are situated at places far away from residence area so that in any case explosion like these happen people don’t die.

"Informed that an explosion, believed to be have been caused by a fire near gas cylinders at the sale point, cost the lives of six lock up businesses, ten houses, vehicles, and motorcycles with in area of the blast there at sale LPG sale point;

"Aware that similar explosives have occurred in the very same location in my parliamentary seat in recent times, as transpired in 2016, 2018 (Abule-Egba), 2019 (Abule – Egba), 2020 (Ijegun), and 2020 (Ile-Epo, Oke-Odo), 2020 (Abule Ado)."

The Senate, according to Adeola, is "concerned that Nigerians living in all the heavily populated areas where these explosions happened now live in fear of not only losing their own properties and investments, but it also their lives or the continues to live of their dear ones" as a result of "regular explosive fire disasters."
